Our Story
History
The International Society for the Interdisciplinary Study of Symmetry (SIS-Symmetry) was founded in 1989 in Budapest, Hungary. The Society emerged from a growing recognition that symmetry—a concept central to mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, art, architecture, music, and philosophy—deserved a dedicated interdisciplinary forum.
The founding congress brought together scholars and artists from dozens of countries, united by the conviction that the study of symmetry benefits immensely from crossing traditional disciplinary boundaries. Since then, the Society has held triennial congresses on five continents, published its journal Symmetry: Art and Science, and fostered a worldwide community of symmetry researchers and practitioners.
The Society’s interdisciplinary mission is reflected in its membership, which includes mathematicians, physicists, chemists, biologists, architects, visual artists, musicians, designers, philosophers, and educators. This diversity of perspectives is the Society’s greatest strength, enabling insights that would be impossible within any single discipline.
